Children may be referred for testing to determine their levels of intellectual, or emotional functioning, areas of strengths and weaknesses, and styles of learning and processing information. This testing is useful for diagnostic purposes, treatment planning, and offering care recommendations for home and school.
Evaluation is a 3 step process.
Diagnostic Interview: You and your provider will meet to discuss the concerns and reasons for testing that is bringing you to CAPA. This will allow provider to better understand the testing needed to address your questions and concerns.
Evaluation: The amount of testing will depend on your child’s individual needs and will be discussed with you prior to the evaluation day. Testing typically takes about 2-3 hours. Neuropsychology testing usually takes 4-6 hours.
Feedback Session: Our provider will meet with you to review the final report and explain all of the testing scores and findings. If applicable, you will be informed of any diagnoses and be provided with recommendations and referral as needed.
The steps are the same as other evaluations but is more comprehensive and has a different purpose. It focuses on how the brain is working rather than determining a mental health diagnosis. A Neuropsychologist is a psychologist with specialized training in brain development and anatomy, as well as neurologic conditions and their effects on brain functions. The evaluation can uncover problems in thinking and behavior or confirm suspected problems in a child who is struggling. It can also be used to monitor how the brain is healing after an injury, stroke, or other brain event. It is very useful for children and adolescents with a medical or neurologic history that involves the brain. Children without a medical diagnosis can also benefit from a Neuropsychological Evaluation when there are known or suspected cognitive problems.
